Our offices will be closed for Thanksgiving. November 25 & 26.

If you have a clogged toilet, there are several methods you can try to unclog it before calling a plumber. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Use a Plunger:
    • Make sure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the rubber part of the plunger.
    • Place the plunger over the drain opening and push down firmly, then pull up sharply. Repeat this motion several times.
    • If the water starts to drain, flush the toilet to clear the remaining debris.
  2. Hot Water and Dish Soap:
    • Add a few cups of hot water (but not boiling) to the toilet bowl.
    • Add a small amount of dish soap.
    • Wait for a few minutes, and then try flushing the toilet. The soap can help break down the clog.
  3. Baking Soda and Vinegar:
    • Pour about a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl.
    • Add a cup of vinegar and let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
    • Pour hot water into the bowl and try flushing.
  4. Wire Coat Hanger:
    • Unwind a wire coat hanger and create a small hook at one end.
    • Insert the hooked end into the drain and try to break up the clog by twisting and pushing.
    • Be careful not to scratch the porcelain.
  5. Plumbing Snake (Auger):
    • If the clog is deeper, you can use a plumbing snake. Insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle clockwise to break up the clog.
    • Once you’ve reached the clog, rotate the snake to break it apart.
    • Pull the snake out carefully.
  6. Enzyme-Based Drain Cleaner:
    • Consider using an enzyme-based drain cleaner. Follow the instructions on the product, as these cleaners work over time to break down organic matter.

Remember to wear rubber gloves and, if needed, safety glasses when attempting to unclog a toilet. If these methods do not resolve the issue, and the toilet remains clogged, it may be time to call a professional plumber to avoid causing further damage.

Using plastic wrap (like Saran Wrap or a similar cling film) on a plunger can create a better seal between the plunger and the drain, potentially enhancing its effectiveness. Here’s how you can use plastic wrap with a plunger:

  1. Ensure a Good Seal:
    • Place a piece of plastic wrap over the toilet bowl or drain opening, making sure to cover it completely.
    • Press down on the plastic wrap to create a seal around the drain.
  2. Position the Plunger:
    • Position the plunger over the drain, ensuring that it covers the entire opening and sits securely against the plastic wrap.
  3. Plunge as Usual:
    • Perform the plunging motion by pressing down and pulling up on the plunger.
    • The plastic wrap helps create a better seal, increasing the pressure and suction when you plunge.
  4. Check for Results:
    • After a few plunges, check if the water starts to drain. If it does, continue plunging until the drain is clear.

Using plastic wrap in conjunction with a plunger can be particularly useful if the toilet or drain is not sealing well due to irregularities or gaps. The plastic wrap helps create a more airtight seal, improving the efficiency of the plunging action.
